Denver International Airport Information

General Airport Information Denver International Airport, located in northeastern Denver, Colorado is run by the City of Denver. Scouting for a new site began in 1980 and the airport officially opened in February 1995. Spread over 140 square km, it is the largest airport site in the United States. In 2012, it was the world's 13th busiest airport and the fifth busiest airport in the United States, with 53,156,278 passengers. Denver International Airport has been voted the best in North America six times in a row ( 2005 to 2010) by readers of the Business Traveler Magazine. History Denver’s previous airport was named Stapleton and served as primary airport for the city between 1929 and 1995. Scouting for a new site for Denver International Airport began in 1980 and funding was approved in 1989 for the first $60 million towards building it. This was under the leadership of Mayor Federico Pena, whose name was later used for Pena Boulevard at the airport. The new airport was officially opened in February 1995. Infrastructure Jeppesen Terminal is the airport's land side and it connects via an underground train system to the three concourses, which between them house 95 gates. The terminal is divided into east and west sides and hosts 3 counters for security checks and screening. Jeppesen Terminal has 2 parking lots, covered and uncovered, attached directly to it. There are shuttle services available to take passengers to the outlying longer term parking lots. The airport was built with future expansion in mind so that the existing concourses can be extended and there is room to add two more (Concourses D & E) as necessary. There are currently six runways available. Services The airport provides a host of different services and facilities including ATMs, airport information kiosks, airport mailers, battery charging stations, disability accessible toilets, elevators, phones and flight information screens, money exchange counters, free global calling, shoe shine services, massage and spas, duty free shopping, and a dedicated smoking lounge to name a few.
