Christchurch International Airport Information

Christchurch Airport General Information Christchurch International Airport is situated in Harewood, approximately 12 kilometers away from Christchurch city centre. It is one of the two airports in New Zealand that can handle big aircraft like the Boeing 747 or Airbus A380. It is also the second busiest airport in the country both in terms of the number of passengers it serves and flight movements. History Christchurch International Airport was established in 1936 when Christchurch City Council purchased the land in Harewood. A single runway and small terminal building were built over the next few years and the airport opened for commercial flights in 1940. In 1950, Christchurch Airport became New Zealand’s first international airport. Since the 1960s there have been many developments in terms of extending the runway, improving the terminals, adding buildings and general improvements to infrastructure. With the latest terminal development project underway since 2007, the new domestic terminal was officially opened in 2013. Christchurch Airport can boast of being an Antarctic gateway, with over 100 flights to the continent each year. This link was established in 1955 with Operation Deep Freeze, when eight aircraft from the US Air Force left from the airport for the American base (McMurdo Station). Infrastructure There are over 20 airlines that offer services at Christchurch International Airport. The airport catered to approximately five and half million people in the 2012 calendar year. All modern amenities are available including shops, eateries, lounges, business centers and free WiFi connection throughout the airport. Owing to its strategic location, Christchurch airport is a key gateway for tourists visiting New Zealand.
