General Airport Info Vancouver International Airport is on Sea Island in Richmond, British Columbia. It is managed by the Vancouver Airport Authority, which is a non-profit organization and has a community-based Board of Directors. It is the second busiest airport in Canada in terms of aircraft movement and the number of passengers it serves. It has won Skytrax award for the Best North American Airport in 2011, 2012 and 2013. An estimated 228,000 tonnes of cargo and 296,000 flight movements were handled in 2012. History Construction on the airport began in 1930, with a single runway and a small administration building. With World War II the airport was expanded to include new hangars and a Royal Canadian Air Force base. The super jet terminal was introduced in the 1960s while the 1970s saw the expansion of float plane, charter services and private aircrafts at Airport South. British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Air China started their services at the Vancouver Airport in the 1980s. A new International Terminal was opened in 1996 along with a new control tower. Today the airport is served by 62 airlines and connecting to 99 locations throughout the world. The airport handled more than 17 million passengers in 2012.
